After sharing about my experience with social anxiety recently, I have decided to try something new (fairly new for me, at least). YOGA.
I feel like I need something more in my life – something to relax my body and mind and get me on track for becoming a “healthier version of me”.
I tried yoga for a short while after my second child was born (in 2003) and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the poses, and I really enjoyed the beginning stretches. But life got in the way (I had a newborn and 1 1/2 year old) and yoga kind of fizzled out.
I’ve always heard so many great things about yoga. As with most exercise routines, there are so many health benefits. It has taken me awhile, but I am finally getting motivated to get back into exercising regularly. I’m sure that my recent weight loss has a lot to do with it, as I feel better. Not just physically, but mentally as well. (Still working on losing some weight, by the way. It’s slow going now, as I have not been as diligent about eating the way that I should. But, hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes!).
So, this morning I was motivated. I put my workout clothes on, dusted off my yoga mat, got my bottle of water, and I was ready! I thought that I would start with this video, titled “Yoga For Complete Beginners – 20 Minute Home Yoga workout!”.
Easy peasy. I’ve got this! Or so I thought…
Immediately, I realized that my hips are incredibly tight and it hurts to sit cross legged. Which is not surprising at all, as I have had hip issues for years. Ah, the joys of getting old and being out of shape for so many years.
But, I found a video titled “Flexibility and Range of Motion – Beginner Yoga With Tara Stiles” that I will start off with. I plan on doing this video for a few weeks, until I feel comfortable enough to move onto other poses and routines.
Baby steps. I have to just keep reminding myself of that. I can tell you that I did feel better afterward. Even though this is a short video, it felt good to get up and get moving this morning. And I already feel like my hips aren’t as tight. I am actually looking forward to doing this tomorrow morning!
Oh, and I’ve also been riding my bicycle around town, which has been great with this beautiful weather that we’ve had. I love springtime! (My husband and I LOVE these Priority Bicycles, by the way. If you are in the market for a new bike, I highly recommend that you check these out).
I’d love to hear from you all! Any yoga tips for me? What is your favorite springtime exercise?
